Do You Like Dessert Pizza?

Are you a lover of all things pizza, including dessert pizza? The first time we made a sweet pizza, it was coated in Nutella and sprinkled with berries. This is still one of my favorite dessert pizzas that we make. Over the years, we have made numerous sweet pies, but there are so many more that we should all try! Since we got the Expert Grill Charcoal Pizza Oven, we’ve been experimenting more and having a lot more pizzas. Our new dessert pizza includes pies with strawberry jam, berries, Nutella, and cookie dough with fresh blackberries and frozen fruit.

Some people do not consider dessert pizza an authentic pizza and might even think that it’s a disgrace. Well, if it’s round, there is a dough base, a sweet center, and toppings. I’ll call it pizza all day. When it comes to sweet pizza, you can use raw dough for your crust or ready-made crusts like flatbread. I prefer fresh dough, but I’ve used flatbread and pita bread as alternatives.

If you want to get your juices floating and start making sweet pies, the below list might help to inspire you. Some new dessert pies you should try include:

  • Sweet cream cheese and berries pie
  • Nutella pie with different toppings (ex: fruit, nuts, candy, sprinkles, mini marshmallows)
  • Whipped cream and fruit, nuts, or drizzled chocolate
  • S’mores pie
  • Cherry pie pizza
  • Cinnamon pizza
  • Brownie pie with whipped cream and fruit
  • Banana, brown sugar, and white chocolate pizza pie

These are just a few different sweet pizza options you should try. I think my next pie will include apples, cinnamon, and brown sugar.

Dessert Pizza Crust Options

While I love using pizza dough for the crust part, there are other options you can choose. Some different crusts can be:

  • Cookie dough cooked in a round pan
  • Brownie mixture used as the crust
  • Floured tortilla
  • Flatbread
  • Pita bread
  • Sugar cookie crust

What are some of your favorite dessert pizzas to make? Do you use fresh dough or flatbread for dessert pizza?

Best Pizza Sauce

Is there only one best pizza sauce? Over the years, I’ve made hundreds of pies using various sauce products. The goal was to perfect the pie and be consistent with the ingredients. I struggle with consistency and following recipes, but I try my best for pizza. Stop if you are one of those people who only knows and uses either Ragu or Prego sauce! Other better pizza sauce options will help you make the best pie. Some of our favorite options are listed below. Give them a try! Who knows, maybe you’ll end up loving one and will never go back to your old ways.

DeLallo Italian Pizza Sauce

During the beginning of Covid, I happened to be in the pasta aisle and saw this cherry tomato sauce. I decided to give it a try and fell in love! This jar is perfect for margarita-style pizza! It is sweet without overpowering flavors. Sadly, I now avoid this sauce due to their changes. Lately, every bottle of DeLallo pizza sauce has been runny and feels too watered. I guess everyone is trying to cut down and cheap us and use Covid-19 as their excuse. The price has also increased on this watery sauce. It’s still worth trying, at least once. Maybe you’ll like it on your pies.

Don Pepino Pizza Sauce

The opposite of a runny sauce is Don Pepino. The packaging on this product makes you think you’re using something from the 1950s, and you are! This New Jersey can of tomatoes includes simple ingredients and is full of flavor. The sauce is also a bit on the sweeter side but you can add more garlic and sea salt to it to mellow it down. If you love New York-style pizza, they most likely use this can and add more seasoning to make it their own. The best part, this can cost only a dollar fifty!

Rao’s Homemade Pizza Sauce

Another delicious and simple recipe that you should try is Rao’s pizza sauce. The ingredients are wholesome and not overpowering. When I use this sauce, I think of local restaurants that make specialty or sourdough pizzas. You will probably pay around five dollars for a jar of this tomato sauce.

Classico Fire Roasted Pizza Sauce

If you like a simple pizza sauce with a lot of flavors, give this jar a try. Lately, I mainly use this jar for our pizzas. On rare occasions, I grab the original sauce option, which doesn’t have the fire-roasted flavor. This 14oz jar of sauce will cost you a little under two dollars, and you’ll also find yourself using it in other recipes.

The above are some of the best pizza sauces that we love to use in our New York pies. What’s your favorite pizza sauce? Is it on the list?

Do You Need a Pizza Peel?

So you bought a new pizza oven, but it doesn’t come with a pizza peel? You stare at the stove and wonder, “Do I really need a pizza peel?” The short answer is yes, you do!

Pizza peels can either be wooden or metal. A peel allows you to place your pizza on the stove and retrieve it. Wooden peels are great for transferring the pizza from your kitchen to your oven. The raw dough will not stick to the wooden board. Just be sure to coat it with flour or cornmeal. These options are also great for serving your pizza on. You can also cut your pie on the wooden surface.

Metal pizza peels are great for retrieving the pizza from the hot oven. They are thinner than wood and can easily slide under the pizza. A metal peel makes it easy to rotate your pie in the oven. If you want to use just a metal peel, be sure to coat it generously with flour. This can ensure that the pizza dough doesn’t get stuck to the peel. I recommend that you don’t allow the dough to touch the end of the peel, where the handle begins. If your dough is stuck to the metal surface, gently lift it off a little at a time and dust more flour under it.

What size pizza peel do you need?

Regarding the size of your peel, you can go with small or large ones. Smaller peels can be around 10 inches and larger ones can be 16 inches or more. If you’re making Neapolitan-style pizzas or personal pies, you don’t need to go bigger than 12 inches.

You have other alternatives if you’re headstrong about not buying a pizza peel. You can choose to make your pizza on a silicone mat that is floured generously. Be sure not to burn the mat when you slide the pizza in the oven. You can also use foil dusted with flour as your peel surface. These options are good for placing the pizza in your wood-burning oven. To remove the pizza from the piping hot oven, you will need something thin and wide. A spatula will not be able to hold the entire pie, and you might regret not purchasing that cheap pizza peel you were eyeing.

In my opinion, it’s a good option to have both a wooden peel and a metal one. The wooden pizza peel can be used for placing the pizza in the oven and for serving your pie. Metal peels are great for rotating the pizza and retrieving it from the hot stove.

Best Pizza Ovens for Sale

When it comes to choosing the best pizza ovens, there are endless options. Pizza stoves can be indoor or outdoor, small or large, and use electric, gas, wood, or charcoal. The pizza oven you choose will depend on your budget, needs, and cooking preferences. Some other things to consider when purchasing a pizza oven are:

  • The size- do you want mini pies or 16-inch family pies?
  • Placement – where will you put it/is there enough space?
  • How often will you use it?
  • How heavy is it?
  • What assembly is required?

Indoor Pizza Ovens

If you don’t have a backyard or outdoor space but want to make pizza, an electric indoor pizza oven is your choice. There are numerous of different types of pizza stoves for your home that are easy to use and store. The options are abundant, from rotating pizza ovens to countertop toaster and double-decker pizza ovens. Be sure to look at the product specs to ensure that the product will fit in your kitchen.

Wood Fired Pizza Ovens

If you have a backyard or want to make a pizza oven on a camping trip, you can go with a charcoal or wood-burning oven. Charcoal pizza oven reach a higher temperature than wood-burning stoves. These options will char your pizza and finish it in under two minutes. Woodburning pizza stoves come in several options, including some with a compartment for storing wood. Based on your budget, you can easily find a great wood-fired pizza oven for under two hundred dollars. Be sure to clean your burning pail/container after each use.

Gas Burning Pizza Oven

If you love your gas stove and can’t work with anything but gas, you might as well go for the gas pizza stove. Unlike woodturning and charcoal pizza ovens that need to be cleaned out, gas stoves use clean propane to heat the oven. Gas pizza ovens are easier to use and control as well. Just open the gas, turn on the stove and watch it heat up in no time at all.

When choosing the best pizza ovens for your home, select an item that will suit your needs and budget. Just because an oven costs thousands of dollars doesn’t mean it works better than a $150 pizza oven. The quality of the pie depends on the temperature and your pizza ingredients. Be sure to let your pizza ovens reach high temperatures, so the pizza stone heats up. If the stone doesn’t heat up properly, the pizza won’t cook evenly, and the pie’s bottom will be white.

Best Pizza Dough Alternatives

Making pizza at home is easy and can be fun if you have the best pizza dough. The dough is what makes the pizza. Okay, the sauce and cheese are also vital, but without the dough, you have no pizza. The best pizza dough will probably be the one you make because it will be fresh, and you control the ingredients. A basic pizza dough recipe includes pizza flour or all-purpose flour, water, salt, sugar, yeast, and a little olive oil. The hardest part of making your dough is waiting for it to rise.

Other Pizza Dough Options

If you do not want to make pizza dough ahead of time, you have plenty of other excellent pizza dough options. One of the best dough options for pizza is purchasing it at your local pizza store. If the restaurant does not sell you their dough, you can buy one in your grocery store. I love to purchase Walmart pizza dough, even though the price went up fifty cents during Covid-19. A dollar fifty for one dough is affordable and will help you make a decent pizza pie.

Other great options for pizza dough are pizza kits. These options come in a bag full of pizza flour and yeast. All you need to do is combine the ingredients and add water. My favorite is DeLallo Pizza Dough Kit. The package is around five dollars and makes four small pizzas or two larger ones.

Instant Pizza Mix

Another pizza mix that is fast and easy to use is Betty Crocker Pizza Crust mix. All you need to do is add water, mix, and wait five minutes. The dough will rise and be ready for use. One thing to note is that for this dough, you have to cook the dough for a few minutes first, add your ingredients, and finish cooking.

The last resort for choosing the best pizza dough is to purchase ready-made pizza crusts. These options look like flatbread with holes in them. You take it out of the package, add your ingredients, and bake it in the oven. Voila!

If you want to make pizza at home, the above dough options can help. If you decide to make your pizza dough, you can divide the dough and freeze it for later use.

Expert Grill Charcoal Pizza Oven

Expert Grill Pizza oven is lightweight, easy to assemble and use. The charcoal pan lays in the back, for easy charcoal pouring and cleaning. Once the charcoal is lit and the oven is heated above 700F, you can pop in your pizza pie and enjoy it in just a few short minutes.

The first night that we got the pizza oven we made a cheese pie, two sweet calzones, and meat pita called burek. We got too excited about the pie and did not wait for the oven to reach 700F. Instead, we placed it in the oven when it reached 500F. It took a little longer for the pizza to cook on this temperature but it was delicious!

The next day we made two more pies, this time letting the pizza oven reach full temperature. The pizzas were done in two minutes or less and had the perfect burnt crust. So far we’ve made a few more pizza pies, and they all came perfectly done! No raw pizza dough or hard crust.
